1. The house sits very close to the street. The double doors are original and I believe they were put back on the house recently. It has a Gambrel roof and denter fireplace that heats three downstairs rooms
2. I'm sure the back of the house and porch are later additions to the original. The man is the red sweatshirt id part of the Historical Society. The is only part of the group. The others stayed at Stanley Park to tour the gardens.
3. The Historical Society is planning on restoring the barn and possibly turning it into a store to sell collectables. They need all the revenue they can get!
4. Took me a minute to figure this one out! Its upstairs in a closet, behind the fireplace chimney. They hung their meat on hooks to dry it.
5. Original Kitchen work area. Then used as informal eating area with fireplace. The square hole is for baking and for heating all the rooms. The square below is for catching ashes to make soap. There is also a fireplace in the formal dining room and what looked like a drawing room since they had tow bedrooms upstairs (2 more with the addition). There are removable bricks in two of the fireplaces. Could be for valuables?
6. This is the same porch as in the picture with everyone (picture number 2), just a closer look at the strange window and door. The door is behind the tree and about 4 feet or more lower than the porch as are the windows. You can see the porch was build halfway up the windows. It might have been because the lower door area of the property and the upper back porch are at different elevations or grades. Interesting.
Note: There is also a back staircase leading from the
upper addition to the informal dining area. The porch is the kitchen. No
electricity or water in the house yet. I'm sure they will have to do
something to get up to code. It's very easy to pass the house. It's hidden
with overgrowth, but the property is two lots wide. The Society plans on
making a parking lot away from the house on the opposite lot with a path leading
to the house. They have tons of work to do, but it will be well worth it.
